Rapid urbanisation, high population growth rates, diversified cultures and high consumption have brought about significant waste management challenges to cities within the GCC.

The UAE is one of the biggest producers of waste in the region, but it has chosen to be an example in responding to its responsibilities through strategic partnerships with the private sector. In 2009, these partnerships have seen the region’s largest medical waste treatment plant open, a US$300 million contract awarded for the operation of a demolition waste facility and another to rebuild and operate a tyre recycling plant.

Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashed Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance & Industry and Chairman of Dubai Municipality, the Middle East Waste Summit has been developed as a platform to share strategies, explore global best practice and find companies who can deliver innovative waste management solutions to the region.
